Henri Matisse

Matisse often painted portraits. He would use colour to warp the figure. ‘Portrait of Madame’ (1905) is one of Matisse’s most iconic paintings. Within it, the classical ideas of Fauvism are installed. The image is bright and surreal, with depth being translated to blocks of colour.

Colour played a big role in this re-creation. Grease paint, an oil-based product was used. This gave a similar effect to the oil-paints used in Matisse's original.
