Johannes Vermeer

Light and shadow play a key part in the works of Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer’s works are famed for their realism; they bring objects and people to life. Many of Vermeer's paintings have a luminous quality about them, most notably the 1665 piece "Girl with the Pearl Earring": misleadingly simple at first glance, it takes on almost photo-like qualities in the artist's distinct style.
